What to Wear for Engagement Photos: The Ultimate Style Guide

Planning your engagement session and wondering what to wear? You’re not alone! One of the most common questions I get as a Minnesota engagement photographer is how to choose outfits that look great in photos and feel like you.

Here’s everything you need to know to feel confident and look amazing during your session.

Stick to Neutrals and Soft Colors

Neutral tones like white, cream, tan, soft pink, dusty blue, and sage green photograph beautifully in every season. These colors create a timeless, romantic feel and keep the focus on your connection—not your clothes.

If you’re drawn to bold colors or patterns, opt for one statement piece and keep your partner in something more muted to balance things out.

Skip Logos and Loud Prints

While fun in everyday life, large logos or busy patterns can steal the spotlight in your photos. Keep it classic and let your love story shine. Subtle textures, lace, or delicate florals are perfect alternatives.

Dress It Up (Just a Little!)

You don’t have to wear a ballgown, but this is the perfect time to elevate your style. Long, flowy dresses always look beautiful on camera—especially when they catch the wind! For guys, fitted pants and a button-up or sweater give a timeless, polished look.

Pro tip: Choose pieces that allow you to move, twirl, and snuggle comfortably. Your body language plays a big role in how natural your photos feel.

Bring Two Outfit Options

I always suggest couples bring two looks—one casual, one dressy. This gives us more variety and showcases different parts of your relationship. Think:
✔ A cozy sweater and jeans
✔ A formal dress and suit combo
✔ A sundress and boots combo paired with a laid-back flannel look

Changing outfits during the session also gives you a fun reset and helps shake off nerves!

Coordinate Without Matching

Gone are the days of matching white shirts and jeans. Instead, choose outfits that complement each other’s tones and styles without being too matchy-matchy. Look at your colors together ahead of time and lay the outfits out side by side to see how they photograph.

Don’t Forget the Little Things

  • Clean shoes (they will show in full-body shots)

  • Manicured hands (your ring will be front and center!)

  • Wrinkle-free clothes (steam them before the session)

  • Comfortable undergarments that won’t show through

Need a Second Opinion?

When in doubt, send me a quick photo of your outfits laid out together—I’m always happy to help with final choices. Your session is about you, and I want you to feel confident from the first click to the last.
